• Inspirational magazines

Magazines are such a great source of inspiration to me. They cover a broad range of topics I’m interested in (e.g. beauty, fitness, culture, society…) and provide interesting visuals. I’ve loved them ever since I was a teenager.

Being the only girl in a family of four siblings, I think magazines were a kind of escape to me. They helped me discover another world. At the time, they weren’t blogs or YouTube channels dealing with beauty, health, style… Magazines were it. Each month, I would find out about social issues, news, movies to watch, new books to read and also get product recommendations.

Also, the visual aspect of magazines is of course one of their main appeal. They supply endless inspiration through photos and illustrations. They are, as well, an ideal vessel for photographers, stylists, makeup artists and hairstylists to display their work (and for us to discover them!).

Although I view them with a more critical eye now, I still enjoy reading magazines every month. Yes, the following critics are valid: they sometimes seem to be a kind of hidden shopping guide or giant ad, recurring seasonal topics are quite boring, and (on a more important note), I find that some articles can portray a vision of feminism in which I don’t recognize myself. With time though, you learn to focus on the bits you like and bypass subjects you’re not interested in and, when necessary, voice your critics.

A few of the titles I regularly read are Vanity fair, Time magazine, Marie Claire, Biba, Cosmopolitan, Allure (when I can get my hands on it)… My favorite ones are Glamour and Vogue. By the way, I’m interested in discovering magazines with more of a health and fitness focus (please, shoot me your recommendations!).

In addition, with the claim that magazines are a dying industry, I wanted to stress the importance of the paper medium. What a loss it would be if we could only get the digital version of magazines (or books for that matter). I get the allure of them (and I do have a kindle and enjoy it) but I also like magazines and books as physical objects and I know that I will keep buying them.

Anyway, this introductory story was a way for me to present a category of posts on my blog – What caught my eye (magazines edition) – that I’ll try to update monthly, based on my readings.
